We have put together an outstanding line up of Teams, Ensembles, and Shows for FiiF2017! 

The FiiF2017 Stage will host 3 Finnish Teams, 11 International Teams, 9 International Ensembles, and our World Famous Instructor Show!

Each night starts at 19.00 and is split up into 3 acts, divided by a 15-minute intermission, and features a combination of Finnish teams, International Teams, Festival Ensembles, and, for the first time ever, World-Class Headliners who will bring the whole night to a close!

And as always, we’ll head to O’Connell’s Irish Bar after the shows each night for food, drinks, and even more shows!

We ask a member of audience to provide us with the longest word they know in their Native Language, without telling us the definition. We then then unpack the sounds, emotions, and energy of that word, using it to send us into an unstructured frenzy.

STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT

A long form improv show for two actors. – Two strangers meet at a location (based on a suggestion by the audience). Due to external circumstances they have to stay at that place just by themselves. Little by little, their strangeness turns into familiarity and closeness. Flashbacks highlight some events earlier in their lives. At dawn the two will seperate again. What remains with them is the memory of a night with a stranger.

Foxy Freestyle has been performing together for over a decade. Their shows focus on strong characters and stirring stories, providing illuminating collages covering important themes of life.

Phil Lunn Is… a cabaret singer, created for this one performance. Entirely improvised songs and entirely improvised conversation, all inspired by the audience.

Phil is an improviser from London, UK. He’s been improvising for several years, both on stage and behind the piano.

DÉCIBEL

In everyday life, how can we express ourselves when its not possible to talk? Décibel is spechless show using only the universal body language, onomatopoeia, and sound effects.

This show uses the art of mime to allow the audience to “dive” into situations, real or not, where the use of language is not possible. Accompanied by a musician-percussionist who participates interactively in the stories, they will bring you to realistic and surprising universes.

Impro Infini creates performances with the art of improvisation, for stages, streets, for everyone. Relying largely on physicality, movement, and mime, their shows are a refreshingly bare approach to improvised comedy.

FLICKER

A really interesting form that combines big, energetic scenes with quiet, intimate scenes, together in the same show.

The show alternates between fully-lit scenes and scenes in total darkness.

When the lights are on, players play together freely. When in the dark, players use soundscapes to create beautiful, atmospheric elements and challenge themselves to try something they wouldn’t do with the lights on.

SCRAM 

SCRAM is an internationally touring improv show featuring Jill Bernard (Minneapolis) and Joe Bill (Chicago).  Both performers are world-class improvisers and teachers, each with their own unique approach to Improvisation.

Joe and Jill improvise three scenes concurrently. Funny, daring, and theatrical, featuring two performers willing to break your heart along the way. SCRAM blends elements of Joe’s signature format with Jill’s solo musical show to create a mesmerizing experience for audience and performers alike.

Jill Bernard has been performing with ComedySportz-Twin Cities since 1993, and is a founding member of HUGE Theater in Uptown Minneapolis. A commitment to play and joyfulness is key to her style.

As a founding member of The Annoyance Theater, Joe Bill’s approach to improv is to teach players to “take care of themselves, in order to take care of others in a scene”.

Together, this mastermind duo has performed as SCRAM at festivals and events throughout the USA and the entire World.

Hardy & Hardy is a comedic study of the dynamics of a relationship between two people.

Two improvisers challenge themselves to go slow, calm and deep in a real-time monoscene.  They celebrate the volume spoken by silence as they explore the lives of their characters and let the funny find them.

No script, no cuts, just two characters and their story.

The Flying Reindeer Theater Company is the nothernmost improv company in the world. (That we know of!) Our home is all the way up on the arctic circle in finnish Lapland, where freeze tag is the only kind of tag we can play.

Since our humble beginnings as a small improv troupe way, way, way back in 2010, we’ve grown into a full-blown comedy theater. We do comedy in many forms, including original musicals and plays, but improv is our one true love and it’s always at the core of everything we do.

We love being in the moment and exloring the previously unexplored while having fun with the audience.

Through the medium of song and dance, we’ll uncover the unsung heroes and confront the blatant propaganda we’ve been fed all our lives. Join us for heartfelt ballads, raucous crowd scenes, and magical duets as we offer an unusual window into the stories untold, even surprising ourselves at what we discover!

Bake This is Munich’s first English speaking improv troupe, with an international cast from Malta, England, the USA, Germany, Canada, Spain, and Israel. They’ve been mixing it up since 2011, performing regularly and challenging themselves to take risks on and off stage.

Their name derives from their original rehearsal space in a small bakery and reflects their diversity in blending comedy with serious theatrical elements. They have a continuously expanding, international audience of whom many frequently return to their shows for more. They love to bake it big on stage, and if it can be belted out in song, even better – big emotions, big fun!

Dizzy is a duo consisting of of Peter More and Jochem Meijer, who have played together for more then 15 years.

They love to focus on the small little details in a scene and lead each other to surprising places. Not only do they have there duo Dizzy, they are part of the Easylaughs family (a weekly performing group in amsterdam). Dizzy creates beautiful lighthearted shows, where joy comes first.

Drum Machine is Jill Bernard’s one-person sweepingly epic unscripted musical featuring multiple characters in scenes, monologues and songs accompanied by a musician. The show opens with a brief interview of an audience member, then Bernard creates a musical that weaves details of their life into a historical period suggested by the audience.

Zoom is an organic group show that focuses on physicality, interesting stage pictures and playful connections between scenes.

There is plenty of room for relationships to build between players, and a freedom to move in and out of different realities, as players are encouraged to play humans, objects and animals, all with their own hearts and minds.

The physicality of group play is the beating heart that drives this fluid form.

“OUR PLAY” features two internationally known impro teachers and performers. Patti Stiles (Melbourne) and Joe Bill (Chicago).

Our Play is a show that proves that, whatever “style” of improv you perform, there is a commonality to be found. Joe and Patti are two legends who make each show togther a beautiful thing to see.

Ultimately, the magnificence of the performance comes from their diverse approaches and the their ability to support each other fiercely. Come watch these masters perform together at the height of their craft.

Patti Stiles served her theatre apprenticeship at the world renowned Loose Moose Theatre and was trainied by Keith Johnstone, bringing this knowledge and experience to the improv stage.

Joe Bill is a founding member of The Annoyance Theater, and is widely regarded as one of the best teachers of Scenic and Comedic Improvisation in America, teaching and performing regularly at iO Chicago.

Together, this duo creates beautiful Improvised Theater that transcends culture, style, and distance.

Snorkkeli is an 18-year old Improvised Theatre group from Tampere. Snorkkeli’s performers are talented actors and musicians who love improvisation.

Together, they have performed fantastic Improvised Musicals, touching romantic comedies, fun Children’s shows, long form plays, short form games, and anything else you can name!

What happens when you give two world-class improvisers from different parts of the globe a chance to create their own show at an International Festival? 

Will they play in English? Spanish? French? Who knows! We’ve given them full creative rights to develop, cast, and curate a performance just for FiiF2017! We’ll let them choose whether to play as a duo, or hand-pick their team from our ensemble of over 60 improvisers from around the world! The only thing that is certain, is that this show is going to be exciting!

The Mentors is a show created just for FiiF2017 by Daniel Orrantia and Keng-Sam Chane Chick Té, two FiiF Instructors who come from very different worlds, each with their own approach to Improv and Performing. 

Keng-Sam is an improviser from Reunion Island (French Department), and plays with language, music, and physical space as inspiriation to create improvised theater. Daniel Orrantia comes from Colombia, where he uses clowning, mime, and comedy as tools for expression and storytelling, in an effort to push boundaries between physical theatre and improvisation. Together, these two Mentors will create a show out of the elements provided to them by the Festival Atmosphere.

A HERO STORY

The story of this play is the story of our main character – a hero which is in a journey achieve his goal in life.

The audience plays a large role in this show, both providing elements of the Narrative, such as location and theme, as well as changing the show and story on the spot through specially designed devices. These devices are given to the audience before the beginning of the show, and each has a different dramatic, structural, or scenic effect on the show.

‘The Aunts’ ensemble consists of four independent actors and a musician, who formed in 2015 after they graduated from Kibbutzim College’ Acting School. Later that same year, The Aunts won the ‘Improvisation Championship’ of Israel.

As actors in repertory theaters and of the Israeli national theater ‘Habima’, who perform every night the same play, they wanted to give the audience a chance to influence the show they are seeing, rather than simply being present without participating. As a result, their audiences not only help shape each performance, but continue to help this team develop as a group and create inspiring productions.

Finnish for “Gibberish”, Siansaksa is a world where only gibberish and body language conduct a series of stories, each of which is connected to each other.

Inspired by a single word from the audience, players create will create the outline of the show. The audience is also utilized frequently to help the players with movement to inspire their scenes and stories.

Happily Never After: a dark and twisted musical tale inspired by the warped imagination of film director Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice).

Starting with your suggestion, these award-winning improvisers will take you on a unique journey through mysterious worlds, meeting the grotesque and the innocent and weaving a fantastical tale thats different every time. With black comedy, dynamic physicality and a bespoke cinematic soundtrack this will be a truly playful, creepy and enthralling experience.

The Maydays are an award-winning British company who have been performing and teaching improvisation for 13 years.

Previous winners of Brighton Fringe Best Comedy Show Award, they have headlined sellout international improv festivals throughout Europe and toured to USA, playing in some of the major improv shows in Chicago.

The Maydays have a monthly residency at Komedia, as well as other gigs throughout the UK, and run sellout residential improv retreats twice a year.

This format was developed to allow veteran and beginning improvisors a chance to borrow each other’s influences.

In this format, each improvisor is partnered with another, and when one enters, their partner must enter as well. When one exits, their partner also exits.

The form forces players to make absort choices and creates an opportunity for lovely group scenes.

The Scramble is a collection of scenes that play into one or more stories, that are framed by a format that is developed organically in.

The brainchild of Joe Bill, this show focuses on discovering the show that already exists in the performers. The final product is the display of the process which is found together.

The FiiF Scramble will also play with the compelling harmonies between different languages and cultures and celebrate the connectedness as improvisers and human beings.
